Young litter pickers from Westgate Hill Primary Academy joined with family and the local community to collect discarded plastic and paper, helping clean the streets around their school.

The army of Westgate Hill Primary Reception pupils – led by teachers – donned luminous jackets, gloves and with litter grabbers, took to the streets of Arthur’s Hill to rid them of rubbish.

It was the latest in a series of litter picks by school pupils who are learning about the importance of caring for their local community as good citizens.

Westgate Hill Primary has been at the heart of the Arthur’s Hill community in Newcastle’s west end for nearly 120 years.

Parents and local residents helped the children to bag rubbish as they worked their way around several streets which link to their school.

Katrina Jordison of the Greening Wingrove community group, once again kindly provided the litter grabbers, gloves and jackets for pupils.

Greening Wingrove works closely with local people and organisations to help improve the area.
