Andrew Hunter

Andrew has been Headmaster of Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, since 1998.  He also has a long history of supporting the Laidlaw Schools Trust, because he was originally appointed a governor of Excelsior Academy from 2009 onwards.  He has a simple educational philosophy with a three-part focus: academic inspiration, co-curricular enrichment, and pupil support through individual pastoral care that writes off no child.  Andrew believes that LST must: have teachers who are passionate about their subject; commit to offering a full range of co-curricular activities and academic societies; have strong pupil support and pastoral care.  Andrew would like all the youngsters of LST to be “passionately aspirational”.  He agrees that this depends on every member of staff (and trustee) manifesting that sense of moral purpose.  Andrew is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC), the Advisory Board of the RNCF/Springboard Bursary Foundation, and a Governor of Ardvreck Prep School in Crieff, Perthshire.
