Andrew Hunter Andrew was originally appointed a governor of Excelsior Academy in 2009. In 2018 he “stepped down” from his headship at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, having led the school for twenty years. He has a simple educational philosophy with a three-part focus: academic inspiration, co-curricular enrichment, and pupil support through individual pastoral care that writes off no child. Andrew believes that LST must: have teachers who are passionate about their subject; commit to offering a full range of co-curricular activities and academic societies; have strong pupil support and pastoral care. Andrew would like all the youngsters of LST to be “passionately aspirational”. He agrees that this depends on every member of staff (and trustee) manifesting that sense of moral purpose. Andrew now acts as a mentor for new HMC headteachers, he sits on the Advisory Board of the RNCF/Springboard Bursary Foundation, and he also acts as an educational adviser for Merchiston International School, Shenzhen, China.
